The travel and hospitality industry has entered a period of accelerated reinvention.
Global travel volumes now exceed pre-2020 levels, but traveler behaviors and expectations have permanently shifted. According to the Hospitality Global Market Report 2025, the global hospitality market continues to grow steadily, reflecting strong demand and the rise of new segments such as work-from-anywhere nomads and experience-driven leisure travelers.

With this surge comes a new set of customer expectations. Travelers now look for seamless, digital-first interactions, hyper-personalized offers, and experiences that align with their values around sustainability and well-being. Technology adoption in travel was already strong years ago; the past few years have simply cemented digital engagement as the norm.

Today, airlines and hotels must innovate continuously and view loyalty not as a side program but as a strategic growth engine—rethinking how they attract, retain, and delight travelers in a marketplace where choice is abundant and attention spans are short.

Trends

Structured loyalty programs are moving beyond points

Points can still play a role, but loyalty programs must be more than just earn-and-burn mechanics. Successful brands are creating dynamic programs with third-party offers, soft benefits, and experiential elements that keep travelers engaged long after their trip is over.

Experiential rewards are essential

Experiential rewards build emotional loyalty by creating memories that live beyond a discount or upgrade.

Think of a handwritten welcome note from flight crew, a complimentary bottle of champagne in a hotel room, or behind-the-scenes access to a hotel kitchen with a renowned chef. These experiences inspire travelers to share their stories, amplifying brand reach and perceived value.

Immersive experiences are on the rise

Virtual and augmented reality continue to redefine how travelers interact with brands.
Examples include virtual concierge services, immersive airport “metaverses” that let travelers explore restricted areas like a control tower, or Hilton’s Connected Rooms, where guests use an app to personalize everything from streaming services to artwork on the wall.

Sustainability is shaping loyalty choices

Travelers are more conscious of their environmental impact and expect brands to share that commitment.

Innovative loyalty programs now reward eco-friendly actions—from reusing towels to booking non-stop flights or donating points to green initiatives (with brand-matched contributions). These initiatives not only reduce footprint but also strengthen emotional ties.

Opportunities

Create a journey for downgraded members

Many brands extended or upgraded loyalty status during periods of reduced travel. As regular travel patterns returned and tiers recalibrated, some travelers experienced status downgrades, often leading to frustration.

This is a prime opportunity to design personalized re-engagement journeys—special offers, targeted experiences, or tier recovery challenges—to keep these high-value members loyal.

Who owns the journey? Airlines vs. hotels

A quiet but significant competition is underway between airlines and hotels to own the end-to-end travel experience.

The player who controls the entire journey—from booking and transportation to accommodation and in-destination activities—owns the customer data and the ability to shape future offerings.

Third-party partnerships and integrations reflect this battle.

  • Hilton’s Connected Rooms deepen engagement throughout the stay.
  • Delta’s partnerships with Starbucks and Lyft reward travelers even when they’re not flying, encouraging customers to keep their entire travel ecosystem under one umbrella.

These strategies not only capture spend across the journey but also unlock valuable data for personalization and product innovation.
